How to confirm whether my range extender is in the best location?
For better Wi-Fi coverage and signal strength, plug in the extender:
- About halfway between your router and the Wi-Fi dead zone
- Within the range of your router
Check the extender’s Signal LED by referring to the relevant user manuals. Generally a red Signal LED or less than 3 LEDs indicates poor signal from your router.
For more intuitive location assistant, access extender settings via the Tether app and go to Tools > Location Assistant.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 13, 2021Size: Wi-Fi 6 | AX1800Verified PurchaseInstallation is very straight forward. Created a complete OneMesh installation with 2 of these RE605X and a AX6000 router. Needed to cover 4 levels and 4000+ square feet with multiple concreate and block walls and metal partitions. When you first configure these extenders with the Tether app it takes about 3 minutes each. After that they are up and running on the OneMesh from the AX6000 main router. Both 2.4 and 5G radios working perfectly. I wanted the final location to be past the half way point to the dead zones so I used the gigabit port on them to connect with the existing Cat6e cable though a managed switch back to the router. They did not immediately convert as Access Points and instead tried to act as the DHCP to the devices on the on the switch located half way back to the main router and pass them on through WIFI, it works but not optimum for my installation. I had to dig a little further into the tether app and find the tools icon at the bottom that brought up a list I needed. There is an 'operation mode' near the bottom of the extensive list of tools that allows the switch from 'range extender' to 'Access point' which does not require a strong wireless signal back to the router. Flipped the mode the RE605X turns off the local DHCP and turns off the radio back to the router, Reboots and offers full speed Gigabit connection direct to the router for any wireless devices in that area. This makes WIFI speed faster because it does not have to retransmitted data to router over the WIFI.
The seamless WIFI walk through the whole space and multi-levels works so much better then the old SSID hopping that was required before. This solution covered the dead zones much better then some of the other mesh solutions I have tried before. We had to abandon the other pretty looking meshes we had tried as they did not work reliably enough for our requirements.
The only complaint that I have about the TP-LINK solution is that I cannot name the multiple RE605X devices that show up on network. I have kind of solved that by noting the MAC address and adding that number on a label added to the front of each. With out the MAC difference they appear identical in the app so you have no way of knowing which one your are selecting and which you are configuring due to the lack of ability to uniquely identify them. I might add a another Range extender or two in the future to increase the coverage of the outside space. We still have serval feet of snow out there right now so no one is using the picnic tables to test WIFI strength, so it will be several weeks before we get out and test how well the coverage has extended outside the walls. I will have to check if TP-LINK offers any solutions that are more weather proof than the RE605X for outdoor WIFI coverage.
So in summary my first experience with the TP-LINK ONEMESH has been extremely positive. It has easily solved several problems we had some other vendors mesh solutions and we were able to create a very affordable single SSID mesh that automatically connects WIFI devices to the best access point using the optimal frequency and our users do not have to keep searching for the strongest WIFI signal to connect to as they move through the space the OneMesh does it all automagically for them.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 31, 2022Size: AC1750Verified PurchaseThe fact is, this actually is a pretty decent, reliable and affective device — WHEN IT IS CORRECTLY INSTALLED, USED AND MOST IMPORTANTLY… UNDERSTOOD…
The reality is that in this day and age, most people have excellent base-routers in their homes. Even the crappy service provider ones are fairly decent devices. The issue with these things, though, is that they are mostly exceptional devices only when they’re using their 5ghz connections. Where most people believe they’re having connectivity problems and their routers need ‘extending’ or ‘boosting’ is almost always when the device they need assisted is trying to connect to their dual-band base routers which can accept either a 2.4ghz or 5ghz device, but in many, if not most, cases the device needing help is ONLY a 2.4ghz item. And then this is where the problems begin.
Home dual-band router these days will almost always prioritize an incoming connection-request from a device into its 5ghz frequency field, even if that request is coming from a 2.4ghz-only device. Result of this is usually connection failure. And so… the unsuspecting person believes it’s an issue with their router needing a boost. Wrong! It’s an issue with their router needing a little discipline! Lol. Not a boost. It needs to be taught to recognize those 2.4ghz devices out there and then to immediately allow those devices a priority to connect immediately to its 2.4ghz band — instead of its 5ghz band. Most routers, especially many newer ones, don’t do this especially well. So… those routers need help. And that’s when and where this beautifully affective extender comes in.
This extender will very specifically have you set up two separate extended bands… one for your router’s 5ghz and another for its 2.4ghz. Once that’s done, and you’re ready to connect something to your WiFi, and it doesn’t work the first few times you try it, then try connecting those things to the now-available newly created ‘extended’ 2.4ghz band. Or if you’re using your phone to connect an item with its own app, like say, smart plugs and/or bulbs, then you absolutely MUST switch your phone’s internal WiFi signal over to that newly created 2.4ghz ‘extended’ network. I guarantee all your connectivity problems with those devices will disappear.
So what’s really happening here is you are making ‘visible’ your home router’s 2.4ghz network to anything that wants to connect to it, whereas beforehand, that network was very likely ‘invisible’ to you prior to using this new extender because unfortunately while all these new dual-band routers are great, they definitely do not like things automatically connecting to their 2.4hhz bands. So you have to ‘force’ that connection down their throats as-it-were.
There are other work-arounds to get your home router to connect to those ‘difficult’ devices, but this is by far the easiest solution — albeit it does mean having to spend some money on one of these WiFi extenders. And it just so happens this is a really good one to do just that.
Don’t blame your router. It just wants to dictate to you which frequency your device must try to marry with. It usually still is, though, very, very good at projecting its own indigenous signal great distances reliably. You just have to find a way to have its 2.4ghz band show up in your devices. And that’s what these ‘extenders’ will do for you. So actually, they’re your friend, not your enemy — especially this particular TP-Link unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than my previous extender.
Size: Wi-Fi 6 | AX1800Verified PurchaseWe had previously purchased a TP-Link RE315, but it was beginning to fail with frequent connection drops. Had it for quite a while, so we did at least get good use out of it.
Kind of turned out to be a good thing the old one died. This RE605X is a much superior unit. With the RE315, it could only relay - at best - 120 Mbs on a 400 Mbs connection. This one does about 220 Mbs. Which is actually very good for most any single, non mesh device.
This RE605X also has much greater range. Sitting only about 30 feet away from the old RE315, the 2.4 GHz band was weak, and the 5 GHz band was almost nonexistent. With this unit, even the 5 GHz connection shows full bars on our devices.
My three star rating doesn't have anything to do with TP-Link. I didn't need their help to set up the extender, so a full five stars would be meaningless, as would one star. In this case, three simply means neutral.
